Frequently asked questions regarding the use of Perlite in the Garden.

1) What are the benefits of using Perlite in pots and in the garden?

Perlite creates an ideal environment for healthy plant growth.

2) How does Perlite help the plant's roots?

Perlite creates a looser soil which helps the roots breathe better and receive water easier. When using perlite in the soil, the roots can penetrate the perlite/soil mix easier and develop more fully.

3) Does Perlite support the plant's health?

Perlite is a natural inorganic volcanic mineral free from plant pathogens and weed seeds. Given its inorganic nature and its ability to create a looser soil, it enables the growth of robust plants.

4) How do plants that are sensitive to moisture react to perlite in the soil?

Many ornamental plants can be sensitive to high soil moisture. Perlite, when mixed in the soil, creates such a structure that even excessive use of water will not impact the health and growth of the plant.

5) Does perlite dissolve over time?

No. Perlite remains unchanged in the pot and continues to retain all of its benefits from the moment of planting or transplanting of the plants.

6) What is the benefit of placing perlite on the bottom of the pot?

The use of a perlite layer at the base of the pot before transplanting creates excellent drainage conditions. At times, when drainage is not sufficient, pockets of stagnant water can form and result in the suffocation of the plant's roots or the  development of pathogens due to high ground moisture. This problem is avoided with the use of a perlite layer.

7) Is perlite difficult to handle?

No. Perlite is a very light and clean material. It is easily transported and it does not increase the weight of the pot.

8) Can perlite be used in the garden?

Yes. Usually the soil in residential gardens is tight. Perlite helps to create a looser structure resulting in faster setting of the plant's roots after transplanting. The roots receive ample air and water, absorb the provided nutrients easier and the rots grow faster. The same benefits also applies for turf (lawn).
